Design Inspiration: Non-White Shutters

Aug 1, 2017

In Part Two of our Design Inspiration series covering plantation shutters, we offer up a new way of thinking about a classic window covering. We tend to think immediately of white plantation shutters, and with reason—they are a gorgeous, traditional window treatment that is timeless and goes with any décor theme. But, have you considered the design options available to you when you think outside of white? Plantation shutters look AMAZING painted as an accent color or stained in a rich wood finish. We present you today with five great examples of non-white plantation shutters to help you get those creative juices flowing.

We love so, so much about this room. It perfectly demonstrates the range and versatility of plantation shutters. While thought to be a traditional window treatment, you can see here that they fit perfectly into a more modern environment. The blue velvet mid-century modern chair ties in expertly with the bright blue painted shutters. The white walls and trim provide a neutral canvas, allowing the blue to shine.

How calm and lovely is this neutral room with white walls and blue shutters that give a point of visual interest and serve as the perfect complement to this clean farmhouse décor? This is such a simple update, with such a powerful impact.

These green shutters absolutely make this room. They round out the nature-inspired earth tones and take an otherwise plain room to the next level.

We love this bathroom so much we also featured it in our Part One series on plantation shutters in bathrooms. Again, when you have a white room with walls and trim all neutral, the addition of unexpected color, even a contrast neutral like this grey, allows the shutters and window to pop out and stand on their own.

Our last example turns from paint to stain, with these richly stained plantation shutters. The contrast with the white room gives the room depth and draws the eye to the light source.

Did one of these beautiful rooms inspire you to think beyond white plantation shutters? As you can see in these examples, an all-white color scheme with white walls and trim is the perfect backdrop for doing something fun and unexpected with your plantation shutters. We custom and stain and paint all our plantation shutters in our workshop here in Birmingham. We can create a completely custom look that makes your windows POP. Contact us today to schedule a time!
