Shutters in Bay Windows

Jan 11, 2018

Plantation shutters and bay windows are, in the words of Forrest Gump, like “peas and carrots.” They just fit together. To show you a variety of great ideas for using shutters in your bay window, we’ve found gorgeous rooms that feature a wide range of approaches, with examples that include both stained and painted shutters. Whatever your space calls for, plantation shutters offer a design that will make the most of this unique architectural feature.

A Gorgeous Combination

We found five amazing examples of plantation shutters used in bay windows that really ramp up the style and impact of the room.

If you are a regular reader of our design ideas blog, you know that we love a good painted plantation shutter. White is great, but sometimes a room calls for something a little more dramatic. These black shutters are the perfect pair with the gray tones of the wall paint and carpet. The Lucite chairs add a funky touch as well as serve to keep the room light.

How dreamy is this huge soaking tub inside a bay window? The soft, relaxing colors and all the light that floods in, make this a bucket list bathroom. The benefit of plantation shutters in a bath space like this one is the flexibility. For privacy, you can shut the shutters in seconds – no cords, no wand to twist. When you want the light to pour in, you just open them up and enjoy the brightness of the light-filled room.

One of our favorite window treatments is the combination of shades with shutters. Check out this cozy reading nook inside a bay window that offers the soft texture and color of the roman shade with the durability and flexibility of the plantation shutters.

The example below provides another beautiful example of painted plantation shutters, used here in a delightful breakfast nook with a combination of bay windows and an exterior door. The mint color they’ve chosen blends perfectly with the clean white walls and rustic wood floors and table, offering a simple and pretty space in which to enjoy your morning coffee. You can see in this example that even when closed, the shutters offer an attractive window covering that makes the most of the bay window setting.

We’ll finish off our tour of amazing bay windows today with my favorite. This bath is another amazing example of a soaking tub tucked into a bay window (can you tell I’m dreaming of such a bathroom!?). The yellow tile floor is amazing, and the rest of room is designed to work with it. The result is perfection. The plantation shutters keep it light and clean and fresh, allowing the Moravian star above the tub, the creamy yellow walls and that to-die-for tile floor to shine.
